Let's Play Dress-Up!

March 30, 2017

If you have a small closet or limited space for your clothes, you might keep off-season clothes in storage somewhere. Maybe in a box in the back of a closet or in a wardrobe in the attic. When it comes time to break out the shorts and put away the heavy coats, what do you do?

Switching out seasonal clothes can feel like a chore, but it doesn't have to be. Make a game out of it instead! When I was a kid, my mom would hold "fashion shows" for me and my sister so we could try on the new season's clothes (weather season, not fashion season; we're a practical family but not a trendy one) and see what we liked and what still fit. Our complicated feelings about hand-me-downs aside, we loved this ritual! It was quality family time, we got to feel glamorous even in old, '90s stripes, and we learned what works for us and what doesn't.

I'd be doing this again right now if I personally kept off-season clothes out of my regular rotation. If you live in a climate with ridiculous weather fluctuations like Oklahoma (where the weather's made up and the seasons don't matter) you might keep everything accessible all year round and seasonal switch-outs aren't really relevant. Or you might just have enough space to keep everything accessible without the need for a switch-out.

So what do I do now that I don't have a family fashion show anymore? Well, I make a different fashion show out of it. When the Spring Cleaning Bug or Winter Hibernation Bug hit me, I crank some music that makes me move and try on some of the things I haven't worn in a while. I'll use the past year's experience to help me decide what I still love, what still realistically fits, what is good to have on hand, and what can move on to a different home. For me, the music makes the experience enjoyable. I feel good inside when that right music is playing, so I have a more positive mindset while trying on clothes that are not always flattering.

Even if it's just a section at a time, it can be fun to get rid of what doesn't suit you and make it easier to get to the clothes that do. What have you tried that works for you? Having shows on in the background? Going to a clothing swap with friends? I'd love to hear your experiences in the comments.
